Search at nostr.band indexes everything - connects to all relays and builds a full index. And there is no keyword search feature built into the nostr protocol, relays can't do that at the moment, so for a while you'll have to use some external tools. And even if search by keyword is added to the protocol, indeed you'd only be searching through relays you're connected to, so maybe an external search tool with full index would still be useful. 

Or maybe client apps (damus, astral) could integrate an external API to do the keyword search. If users demand it :)
