I have a Searchlight Cookbook recipe from 1931, goes along the lines of:
3 cups flour
4 tsp baking powdew
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
6 tablespoons of vegetable shortening, or lard. Sort of rub the spoonfuls into the dry stuff to make a crumble.
<1 cup buttermilk
squeeze the milk into the biscuit dough as you pour a cup in bit by bit, until it's just barely holding together.
Be sure to flour the biscuit cutter, since these biscuits will fall apart super easy. Just sort of... smooshing the big pieces together can work in a pinch. Be generous in the thickness of the biscuit. If you added a small enough amount of milk, they should double in height, or more. Leave them sit 10min to rest, then put 'em in a 450 degree oven for 12 minutes.
