Ok America, you want to be New Rome?

The imperial title has been vacant for 219 years, ever since Francis II abolished the Holy Roman Empire 1806 to stop Napoleon from usurping it.

This is not the longest interregnum.

The HRE itself only picked up the mantle some 324 years after the last Roman Emperor in the West abdicated in 476.

So, if you want to have the purple, simply:

1. Get elected German King
- you don't have to be German
- you don't have to show up
- you do have to convince Central-European warlords and aristocrats

2. Be coronated in Aachen
- natural termal springs nearby
- this is the honestly the best part
- you become 'Roman Emperor in Waiting'

3. Make pilgrimage to Rome
- ideally by foot
- across the Alps
- within 5 years

4. Get the Pope to crown you Emperor
- pretend you don't want it (!)
- don't overstay you welcome
- despose the Pope if necessary

However, there are a couple of things I feel you should know before you do:

1. The Bible says there will be four great empires before the end of times. Rome was the fourth and last. So Roman Christianity cannot suffer a fifth Empire, it must always be a continuation of Rome. Don't try to rebrand.

2. The Empire gained the sobriquet 'Holy' when its mission evolved to protect the Roman Christian world after the Great Schism. So abandoning NATO is out.

3. This is a long term commitment, not something the next President can just executive order themselves out of, ok?
