You won't hear this from anyone else...
Think of the treble clef (upper 5 lines) and base clef (lower 5 lines) being connected by an imaginary line in-between (middle C).
This gives you 11 "continuous" lines.
The alto clef works on the same "map" - the 5 lines are just the central 5 lines of those 11. Its central line is middle C, upper 2 overlaps with treble, lower 2 overlaps with base.
