Feb 1. Introduce your MC as if they were a fighter in the ring.
Interesting question, since in the very first scene in the very first book of the first trilogy, my MC is a fighter in the ring (and this isn’t even one of my questions this month 😂). Or what passes for a ring on the prison moon of Phobos. I christened it with the neologistic “airena” since it’s an arena which has to be domed, to keep the air in. He competes in the Tournament for his only chance of freedom. It’s a popular show, broadcast live all over the Mars colony, and to every country on mother Earth. If he can win through to the Final, and win that, he’ll be granted a pardon and his freedom. But in an earlier bout, he faces Torsten Vogler, the notorious inventor of the deadly narcotic ‘Infradone’. So that’s the contest we have for you tonight…
“Be afraid my friends, be very afraid! For we have something special for you tonight! A murderer so foul he doesn’t even remember committing the gruesome act that left Prefect Montague of District Seven with hardly any recognisable features. He showed no remorse then, and he’ll give no quarter tonight. I give you… Jann Argent!
Mark my words, if his opponent manages to escape with his life there’ll be at least one more scar on his ugly face before this bout is done. As usual the guards have strategically hidden a variety of blades and bludgeons around the airena, but neither contestant will find a shield. It’s going to be bloody, people, so don’t forget to disable your smartscreen filters. You won’t want to miss any of this action! So without further ado ladies, gentlemen, and non-binary folx, let battle commence!”
