The main societal problem is the push from corporations to ban the reuse of seeds by treating the GMO plants as their "intellectual property" that they in fact rent to farmers under extremely restrictive licenses. This cuts the costs of producing "classical" hybrids (which is labor intensive), but in the same time ruins genetic diversity of crops (by running local seed producers/institutes/seed banks out of business), and forces farmers to use the corporate product. 2/2
