However, it would be insanely, stupidly self destructive if they did use it improperly. That type of mistake always ends up leaking out and the PR fall out would be horrifically bad.

Lots of companies are greedy and even a bit myopic, but they aren't stupid and gathering that type of data would be corporate suicide.
