As I understand it, the Talmud is just the first 5 books of the Old Testament. It was not uncommon for the Israelites to go out of their way to defy God's commandments and try to justify it with some twisting of the Law (hence Jesus' and John the Baptizer's rebuking and the many times God forsook them throughout history).

That said, I have read the Old Testament, and the only mentions of such things attributed those actions to people deemed to be evil.
