I've yet to dive into any codebase of any of these microblogging systems. All I've taken a look at so far has been Friendica and it's in such a bad state that I can't even think in plugin architecture having any priority.

Oftentimes with free software the lack of something is just due to the lack of developers proposing it. Step up with your implementation or design of such feature maybe ?
