I think her mother was more abusive than Gary. But Gary still sounds abusive. He had kind moments, too. They were probably genuine, not just "grooming". But he had selfish moments centered around his own sex drive, too. It's often never as simple as a pure predator/ victim narrative. But I can't read this story and think that he was a fundamentally good person.
