My dad used a version of this at his workplace back in the day, before they had Internet. I can recall it running on compact macs using System 6.
It was a desk accessory called SnapMail, originally from Casady & Greene, later sold to Glass Bead Software. It had a whole Inbox and everything, it was like a combination of e-mail and instant messaging.
It still exists today in a form for OS X, but hasn't been updated in quite a few years: http://www.glassbead.com/snapmail/
Unfortunately the old versions aren't archived anywhere that I can find.
