Been doing that for 30+ years. It's called "EDI" (Electronic Document Interchange), and it's not just for nerds. I prefer the ANSI format to yaml for EDI.
One thing missing from your ad hoc EDI - non-repudiation. Well designed EDI protocols have a signed acknowledgement for documents received (MDA) - so you can't say "I never got your invoice".
