After Columbia Unviersity cancelled its main graduation ceremony, Columbia University and Barnard College organized a "counter convocation" with approximately 1200 in attendance. Recorded May 16.

The distressing thing about this ceremony is the lack of respirator masks at this indoor mass gathering.
I had been heartened by the prevalence of respirator masks visible at students' anti-genocide encampments, and the comments about care and solidarity students made in explanation.
But the failure to mask at this event seems to say that it wasn't after all about that vision of care and connection and stopping All the genocides.
Maybe they don't care if the right wing says Look, they were only doing it to hide their faces, so it's okay if North Carolina bans wearing masks for medical reasons.
Maybe they don't care about not infecting each other and keeping everyone as strong and sharp as possible for the long struggles.
But I wish they cared.
