In other words: The client (or class of clients) is effectively prescribing the interface?

Is this not effectively a power play, externalizing the costs of the integration onto the external providers?

Apologies as it's difficult to make that statement without it seeming loaded, but I'm trying to tease out the dynamics here. It has parallels to me in the struggles of the semantic web, but now with a sufficiently large or influential player that can try and force consistency?
