Kind of off-topic but I used to assume that all commands I knew from the main command line would work in all OTHER command lines, inside other applications.
Then I ended up with a version of sqlite3 which didn't respond to up and down arrows or the delete key. Instead of the expected behaviour I got ^[[A chars appearing on screen.
The library which lets all that happen is readline, and I had a version of sqlite3 which didn't know to use it. I had to recompile/reinstall.
