Late summer is sunflower time! Large stands of sunchokes (Helianthus tuberosus, also known as Topinambur or Jerusalem Artichoke) are blooming on the floodplain. These perennial sunflowers were originally cultivated for their tubers by indigenous people in Eastern North America. The species itself may have been a result of this cultivation - its exact origin is still being debated. Sunchokes are still commercially grown today - and right now their bloom floods our meadows and roadsides with a golden yellow glow.
