I was teaching 13-year-olds on a remote reserve. At the end of the year, my colleague came up to me and said: "I don't know how you did it. You had the roughest class in the school."
I didn't realize it until she said that. They were rough, but deep down, good kids. By June, they'd stand up for the developmentally delayed kid against the bullies and even pick her first in sports. It was beautiful.
I don't think I could do it again because it was A LOT. I still think about those kids.
