It's not as rich as biology, partly because we can't go as far back in time, but there is an established taxonomic structure:

variety (aka dialect, e.g. Western Canadian English)
language (English)
branch (West Germanic)
sub-family (Germanic)
family/phylum/stock (Indo-European)
macrofamily/superfamily (Nostratic???, hard to find evidence)
"LUCA" (Proto-World???, no set term for this level, as it's purely speculative)

So "branch" is roughly equivalent to genus
