As somebody who has worked with some of God's worst amateurs who couldn't let a day go by without telling the world: "Well, I'm a professional," I'm suspicious of the conflation of membership of a professional body and expertise. If the reform of the second chamber is to be truly radical it needs to include lay people with experiences and expertise outside the "professional" circles and even be able to challenge the working assumptions of the professional bodies.
