Sorry Nostriches, I’m in a clown world stress loop and I felt like having a hard core rant but I thought I’d be a little creative and maybe just document the fukery in real time. I’ll preface the following by stating that a requirement to receiving a residency permit is that I show evidence of opening a local bank account. Only one bank was even willing to speak to me as the banks stated they only open accounts for holders of residency permits! The bank I have managed a meeting with is still unsure if they want to move ahead but said they might be able to help. They are a major world bank and in my home country I’ve banked with them since I was 11 years old, as have four generations of my family. I’m now in my early fifties. I feel like I’m having to beg a criminal mafia like organisation to allow me to give them my money which they, without needing to disclose to me, invest and lend to who knows who for their own profit. FUK.
“Please sit down. Someone will be with you in short time”
The bank was empty. The cashiers sat behind their glass screens chatting. Two cubicles with a desk in each, stood in the corner of the hall. As I sat down on the sofa, the two “liaison” staff in their bank uniforms spotted me and quickly sat to attention seemingly pretending to be busy with typing on their laptops that were sitting on their desks.
I waited about five minutes and then one of the liaison ladies stood up and walked towards me, the clicks of her shoes filled the silent room as her heels hit the wooden floor.
“Yes?”, she said.
“I’m here to make some inquiries about opening a bank account.”
“Do you have an appointment?”
“No. Do I need one?”
“Yes, but come over to my desk and we can talk about what opening an account entails”
She listened to me for a minute or two and asked me to show her all the documents I had prepared. A police notice of no criminal conviction from my home country and another from the country that I’m currently in, a bank reference from my home country, birth certificate, passport, identity card, bank statements from my home bank, rental agreement for my accommodation, address proof, my marriage certificate and an approval letter from the immigration department.
“Ok, those documents might be in order but you will need to make an appointment and they will go through the process of making an evaluation and then possibly initiating the process to open an account.”
“Sure. So can you help me to make an appointment or maybe we could just do that now?”
“No, I can only help you make an appointment. Let me check the availability of time slots……Today is 5th September……Sir, the earliest available time would be on September 14th. Shall I book it for you?”
The bank was still empty, the other liaison lady still staring at her laptop.
“Couldn’t we just do it now?”
“No, it takes at least 2 hours for the initial evaluation of your documents and the commencement of the process and there are no slots currently open until next Thursday. If that initial evaluation is successful then the application for an account will be started and then you can expect a decision after at least two weeks. If the decision is in your favour then the account opening process can start.”
