There's a volunteer oak in my backyard which only in the last year has really grown (now about 20 feet tall and spreading). It's *incredible* how much cooler it is under the oak than in the sun. I am *so* happy it has taken off. There's another one also growing nearby. For years I had (stupidly) suppressed the oaks from growing here... (on very bad advice from the neighbors-who-hate-nature). As long as they can survive here, they will be key to moderating the heatwave risk (and also are really low fire risk trees).
