While I agree, the problem is that I can't remember any comparable problem in which that approach worked.
It seems to be engrained in most (all?) humans to avoid the truth of necessary behavior change at all costs, and justify sticking to said behavior because something, something will mitigate it without us having to stop behavior having devastating consequences.
