The only reason to have a universalist religion is control. The pagan gods were specific to cultures, but even more were hierarchical and esoteric. No use as a control structure. But enter in the Abrahamic gods, and you sudden have Truth to worship, and it must be imposed on all, especially those ignorant and uneducated pagans, for us to reach Babel Utopia. I do not disagree with the aim of the Christian religion -- increased holiness through mental self-discipline, basically what Plato and Buddha said -- but I disagree with the method, which is universalism expressed as metaphysical dualism.
