I think "cinematic universe" concept in movies is similar to the "open world" concept in video games. Both can potentially be really fun and cool, actually, but they require a great deal more work and planning to pull off than people in charge seem to think. It takes a lot of time, effort, and revision to pump out mass amounts of content that both provide unique, engaging experiences and that mesh together as a whole.
