Ideally it should be opting in to getting the e-mail updates. I should at the very least be able to opt out at point of signing. In my more cynical moments I suspect that the automatic sign up is so it's harder for me to be certain whether or not Greenpeace is ignoring my unsubscribe requests. Because you can be damn sure I would be opting out every single time I sign and therefore every single e-mail would be easily identified by me as unsolicited
