Enjoyed this post by Tony. I think having worked independently for some time and also in this space, I’ve come to realize a few things that have helped me stay in the game longer. Sharing in case it helps anyone:
One should never sacrifice health for any reason. It’s the only thing that keeps you “in” longer. Taking a shortcut on that is just a delay of eventual breakdown.
It’s not a good idea to devote yourself entirely to any one cause unless you have an extreme dgaf laugh it off personality. People bitcoin for many reasons that may have nothing to do with sticking it to the big guy. It’s fine to be passionate about something, but realize you don’t need to do it all yourself.
It’s about the journey, so take it easy.
“rockstar” personality needs rockstar environment. Simply throwing your energy at a space that doesn’t care for it won’t win you the same success. If you seek recognition, you may not get it. If you seek status, you may not achieve it. If you seek wealth, you may not be rewarded at the same level.
You should never expect too much or rely too extensively on anything. Build out your skills beyond one area of expertise. Even if just to step away as a break, it helps to be able to work on something else that requires a different skillset.
People will have unrealistic expectations and a false portrait of you and eventually will feel let down by your actions, simply beacuse they had the wrong idea of what you’re about. This should not impact your feeling of self worth or percieved standing in a community. It is not a you problem it is a them problem. You have nothing to do with it and cannot control it so don’t stress over it.
It really helps to have a lose personality where you can laugh in times of pain and not take to heart comments from random strangers. There will always be haters, their words don’t matter.
It’s important to have hobbies that have nothing to do with your work (even when that work is what you care about most).
I also found it important to have some wins. Grinding on one thing within any wins is demotivating and can make you question your work and purpose if you tie it to your work. Wins of any kind make the work feel more fulfilling, motivate to keep pushing or help you realign your goals. You can ride the good vibes from small wins just by tackling more defined problems with a defined scope, timeline and a clear path to get there.
