Chemotherapy originated in a tragic accident during World War II. On December 3, 1943, German planes bombed the port of Bari in Italy, destroying several Allied ships including one carrying mustard gas.
The gas spilled into the water, and victims experienced not only burns and blindness but also showed striking depletion of white blood cells in their lymph nodes and bone marrow.
