I want to react to grades: Abolish them for writing. Period. When I look at the damage done with the hundreds, thousands really, of kids I worked with in middle and high schools -- how they lost interest in writing, didn't think they were any good, came to the conclusion that writing wasn't important... I trace much of it to grading.
In classrooms where I got the teachers to NOT grade, kids flourished.
