The practice appears to be growing alongside a shift in social attitudes. “Shop theft used to be a grubby sort of crime,” she said. “Now you have people joking about the latest thing they’ve stolen — how they ‘accidentally’ put a bottle of Prosecco through, disguised as a bunch of bananas.” Supermarket pilfering may just be the tip of the iceberg. A recent study led by David Shepherd, a criminologist at the University of Portsmouth, highlighted a growing tolerance for “everyday economic criminality”. Since 2011, the share of the population that thinks false benefit claims are “never justified” fell from 85 per cent to 67 per cent, he found. The proportion that thinks it is never permissible to accept bribes or buy stolen property had decreased by similar margins. Shepherd said: “What the research shows is that there has been a decline in honesty and that it is associated with younger people.” The rise of social media and tawdry behaviour from public figures, including politicians old enough to know better, may have played a role. “We have young people being exposed to attitudes and behaviours which normalise everyday dishonesty and everyday cheating,” he said. Older generations don’t seem to have been influenced in the same way.
