You see this a bunch of times in Star Trek: some important treaty is being negotiated, and it entirely relies on one single person to be signed, else months or years of peace efforts will be wasted.
It was Riker in "Future Imperfect" and Bareil in "Life Support".
I wonder: does that have any basis in reality?
Both times, the opposing negotiator is genuinely interested in peace and the crucial person on our heroes' side is only crucial because of their experience with the process.
Does that happen IRL? Have treaty negotiations where both parties were largely in agreement and genuinely interested in signing the treaty failed because one key negotiator wasn't available?
