Yes, for casual players, go and other games remain primarily a social pastime as they always have been. For serious, competitive players, the people who play in ranked tournaments, games actually do need to be as efficient as possible and every match, or at least every ranked match, must be cutthroat. Competitiveness is part of the appeal for them.
It’d be interesting to hear someone else’s take on the current go scene; maybe some people like the new strategies and optimisations. At least some people, though, clearly don’t.
