I've used Zai's, swales and planting in pits, my main issue is the soil, its just sand and rocks, so it doesn't hold moisture well. I've been working on it with compost, mulch for a few years, and lately biochar, all of which has helped.

It's getting better and next year I'm focusing on one small area for veggies, growing intensively and with layers in one area that I build up with organic matter and biochar over winter. From there I can, hopefully expand.

I've had productive years on the past, this year has been very tough for many reasons.
