Ah, so the reason the Apple deleted images weren't wiped is that they assumed the only images that existed were the ones in the database, so if the database was corrupted and some image records were invalid, those images didn't exist so they didn't need to be deleted?
This reveals deeply flawed thinking about what it means to wipe a device.
