China Rejects US Defense Meeting — Pentagon
Beijing has turned down a US invitation for Defense chiefs Lloyd Austin and Li Shangfu to meet in Singapore this week, with the Chinese official remaining under sanctions imposed in 2018 for purchasing fighter jets and equipment from Russia.
“At a time of rising US-China tensions, General Li’s refusal to meet his American counterpart will fray regional nerves even further,” Singapore-based analyst Ian Storey told Reuters.
Austin and Li will be in Singapore for the Shangri-La Dialogue security summit from Friday, where Li is set to hold several bilateral meetings with “relevant” countries, according to a defense ministry statement.
