Quick summary of the timing.

The British had advanced from the Suez Canal to Gaza by April 1917, and stalled. The Ottoman Army had defeated two attacks on Gaza, and both sides built up forces on the line running from Gaza to Beersheba.

Beersheba is about half way between Gaza and the Dead Sea and the logistics of the time meant the gap to the East was irrelevant.

The British Imperial forces won the battle of Beersheba on the 31st of October 1917. If they had lost a retreat to the Suez Canal was likely.

The British seem to have made conflicting promises to everyone.
