I bet it would assauge the feeling even were it to have thin supports. There has to be a way to get elegant design feeling with maximized visibility presuming that's what they were going for.
Mayhaps something modified from the tri-spoke designs used for big rigs? Thin bars but made of strong metal with elegant padding?
I would love to just set down and try to design an aestetically pleasing yet sturdy replacement wheel that still fits that style.
