In my non-fiction world, I just mentioned in passing that one of the revisions for a second edition would include using singular they instead of "he or she".
A friend immediately reached out warning me to leave "politics" out of it since pronouns are controversial and distracting form the topic, and now I am confused.
For me, using "they" has become my default for more than 3 years and I never considered it "political".
I am shook, confused, sad, and rather sure I am not going to comply.
