"bottom feeder" as an insult conjures the image of someone who contributes nothing useful to society. A scammer who preys on the desperate working outside of respectable places.
But real bottom feeders are critical to ecosystems, they are efficient recyclers, and literally nothing would function without them.
Why do we project human values on to ecosystems in this way? Why not call a scammer an apex predator? Why does that feel wrong because it's too much like a compliment?
