I've known a number of really motivated young people who hero-worship Edward Snowden et al, who really wanted to make a difference, and tell the stories that were inconvenient to power.
Half of them just couldn't get work and ended up leaving journalism. The other half got chewed up by the system.
Journalism is a rough profession right now, I think. People end up becoming propagandists just to pay their rent.
