Lakshadweep is becoming a popular destination for coastal, beach, and water sports tourism. The Union Government is giving special attention to promoting Lakshadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to compete with other island countries like the Maldives. Water and beach villas are being constructed with the help of the Union Government to draw tourists and provide sufficient infrastructure. The NITI Ayog has given special permissions and relaxations in the coastal regulation zone for tourism infrastructure. The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) is working on setting up beach and sea resorts. Lakshadweep has 26 islands, of which 10 are inhabited, and the economy is dependent on tourism. The islands have a fixed carrying capacity, and infrastructure is being enhanced based on that. Tent tourism is being promoted in the inhabited islands.
