Partially. It’s just the part of adding the lye to water to dissolve. It heats up and creates some fumes, most sit it outside. I don’t do that as I make it in my workshop and just do it across the room. After the lye water reaction (10 mins or so) you add it to the fat and you can do this in your kitchen, no more fumes. Lye can burn your skin and is an irritant until it combines with a fat. People are unreasonably fearful of it. Probably big soap manufacturers have driven that fear
