one thing is very interesting;
I think I heard this on a podcast, you probably wouldn't care for it given your political affiliations "Ghost Stories for the End of the World"..
they did a segment about the cults of southern california in the 1960's.

A major concern in the FBI and CIA in the 1960's was the emerging civil rights movement spililng into a full on revolution of some sort, being led by black convicts. Efforts were made at ensuring that solidarity movements would be broken, leaders would be compromised, either by hook or crook, that heroin and crack would flood into poor neighborhoods, etc.

look into Dr Jolly West; a very interesting fellow, think he was involved in the Sirhan Sirhan/Bobby Kennedy assassination and MK ULTRA.

"The People's Temple" seems like a "left counterpart" to whatever was going on with the Process Church.. With Jim Jones basically having all sorts of weird connections (He was a door to door monkey salesman in fucking suburban Indianapolis as a teenager).

The weird shit that went on with regards to Latin America was wild;
the US was accusing the cubans of "terrorism" while Cuban Exiles were blowing up airliners and making all sorts of wild accusations at the sandinistas while the Chileans killed a fucking U.S. Congressman and his secretary in a car bombing IN Washington DC.
