Consistent revenue is how you hire (for example) professional UX designers to make software usable.
Subscriptions are as good a way to do that as any, though I personally prefer the model wherein software simply stops receiving updates if payment ends rather than being cut off. This seems like a near-perfect alignment of incentives.
