I think it's also worth noting that the breakup of AT&T in 1982 was under the "pre-Bork" framework of antitrust (yes, the case had been made but judicial attitudes still reflected different thinking) whereas the reassembly of AT&T typifies "post-Bork" thinking, e.g., "there are no bad mergers". Fortunately, Kahn & co at the FTC are working to up-end that notion and revitalize competition.
