The thing is, "social media" works all kinds of ways. Reply gating is a feature in loads of systems, including some in the fediverse.

So to me, we can make social engagement about whatever we want, and use lots of forms and shapes that are available offline to make our experience online richer and better for more people. But I am an internet optimist, for my sins.
