I'm generally not one to applaud something the government does well, but I was talking with a friend a few weeks ago after filing to shut on of my businesses down, about how nice Pennsylvania's new "One Stop Shop" system is for small businesses is, that didn't exist a few years ago. And what I mean is, it's just refreshing to work with a system that doesn't absolutely hate your existence and want you to fail and get in trouble with the law.
It:
- Actually works, websites, links, redirects, pictures, all of it mostly worked
- Has detailed step by step guides for how to do the correct paperwork for tons of scenarios (hard to do right)
- Tips for things like federal guidelines and SEC stuff
- Help and guides for setting up unemployment, employee taxes and licensing stuff
- A central portal for managing and seeing the state of your businesses according to the department of commerce
- Submitting/e-filing paperwork
- Checklists that actually ensure you don't get in trouble and do the correct paperwork at the correct times.
- Offers to email you reminders and checklists at every step so you don't forget or get overwhelmed.
It's seriously refreshing. When I started one of my businesses I was scared shitless I didn't do the right paperwork, or didn't talk to the right department or didn't get authorization from X etc. You just simply didn't know. Accountants only know or can help so much.
