Wow, I got an interesting phishing call this morning that seemed like it might be somewhat targeted. It referenced something that made me think it was just my credit card company being absolutely stupid wrt security. Calling them just now, they say they have no record of any calls being made to me, so it was definitely a phish.
The reason I initially thought it was a legit call with poor security practices was because it's a branded card and the brand recently switched card companies and the new one was awful when a real fraud happened. (A gas station in Mexico double-swiped my card, but the number itself wasn't compromised.)
My first thought was "this company is so bad, it doesn't surprise me that they would ask for PII in a cold call over the phone." Well, looks like they didn't.
Reviewing the call in my head, though, I may have answered "yes" out loud when they asked if it was me by name. That's a scam I just learned about, where they record you saying "yes" and then use that to verify some charge.
