I don't think most parents truly care that the kid is a repository of knowledge or that their grades are good.
What they care about is that the kid has a good life. If school didn't exist, but being able to make balloon animals was an important job qualification and indicator of success, that's what parents would want for their children.
I suspect that scholars sometimes forget about this, because they love knowledge for knowledge's sake. They have a philo - love - for Sophia - the goddess of wisdom. They're philosophers, in other words.
