Is there even one bus helping take people to safety from Yellowknife? If Canada was a normal country with a national and provincial networks of bus services we'd be able to commandeer those and fill them with busloads of people.
There is also a rail line that goes all the way to Hay River. We could put thousands onto trains in very short order. It's much shorter to drive there than all the way to Alberta.
Filling planes is slow and hard and expensive! Now we're talking about an airlift by the military as well.
When it's all hands on deck like this, we need all options. Limiting options to two, personal vehicle by one road, and airplanes, is dangerously limited.
