My 2010 Thinkpad has one and it's nice to have.
The last time I saw a software indicator light was in 1990 when the "Macintosh Classic" came out. People had gotten used to HD indicator lights on the SE and II line machines, so someone made an INIT to emulate one on the menu bar.
The best I can do now is watch "PSI full IO" in htop. :/
